In March 2014, Italian web developer Gabriele Cirulli—then just 19 years old—coded the original 2048 over a single weekend as an open-source experiment on GitHub. Inspired by Veewo Studio's 1024 and Sirvo's Threes, Cirulli released 2048 under the permissive MIT open-source license.
